BEV vs. PHEV

Electric vehicle charging

As more Rye drivers make the transition from conventional models to hybrid and electric vehicles, more questions pop up regarding the difference between hybrid models. The attraction comes from reduced maintenance, fuel, and so much more! It feels good knowing that your electric or hybrid car can help reduce your carbon footprint on your daily drives.

The Mercedes-EQ electrified lineup offers sleek, powerful, and efficient options for BEVs. So, explore the difference, and answer the questions: what is a BEV? What is a PHEV? Then come test drive the Mercedes-EQ lineup in person.

What is a PHEV?

Drivers looking to upgrade to an electric model will have the choice of a hybrid or fully electric vehicle. There are multiple options when it comes to hybrid vehicles, including a conventional hybrid or PHEV model. Either way, hybrid vehicles utilize a combination of an internal combustion engine paired with an electric motor. This engineering enables you to seriously improve your fuel consumption, so what is a PHEV?

A PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, unlike a standard hybrid, PHEVs can travel short distances solely on electric power. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are equipped with a more powerful battery than a conventional hybrid, so they can be recharged through an external power source, whether home or public. The key difference between a PHEV vs. BEV is that a PHEV still has a gas engine that functions as backup, which can be a comfort to drivers who don’t want to make a complete jump to a BEV.

What is a BEV?

Battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, are completely electric models. What is a BEV? A BEV is run by a battery and a large electric motor. If you are interested in comparing a BEV vs. PHEV, the commonality is that they both need to recharge at home or at one of the many local public charging stations around New Canaan. The charging time for your BEV will depend on which model you drive, but some of the additional benefits of electric cars include:

  • They don’t have an exhaust system, so they eliminate emissions
  • BEVs don’t require engine oil, so there’s no need for oil changes.
  • You can enjoy quieter and more serene rides around Stamford since there isn’t an internal combustion engine
  • Many BEV models are eligible for a federal tax credit
