5 Steps to Preparing for an Electric Vehicle Home Charger

Mercedes-Benz Wall Box Charger Installation

If you’re looking to bring a new car home to Rye, you typically don’t think about how to prepare your home for it. However, if you’re looking to bring a powerful and environmentally friendly electric vehicle home, you’ll want to prepare your home for an electric vehicle. EV home charging stations are just one type of electric vehicle charging station, and Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich is ready to tell you all about electric vehicle home chargers.

1. Decide on a Charging Type (AKA Charging Level)

If you haven’t already checked your type of EV charger, now is the time to start. Most car chargers are either level 1 or level 2, and here’s the difference:

  • Level 1 EV charging often takes days to fully charge an electric car.
  • Level 2 EV charging often takes several hours to fully charge an electric car. You can often get between 60-200 miles of range in just 20-30 minutes with Level 2 DC charging, though. For this reason, most people mix “top-off” charging with overnight charging.

2. Ready Your Garage

If you haven’t cleaned out your garage yet, it’s time to do that as well. You’ll need to get the clutter out of the way for the electric vehicle home charger to be installed.

3. Find Your Power Panel & Assess Consumption

The power panel in your home distributes electricity throughout the entire building. It should be rated for a maximum amount of current flow measured in Amperes. Most new homes have a 100 Amp power panel, but there should be an amperage rating printed on your main circuit breaker.

4. Hire an Electrician

After this, you should have an electrician come to your Stamford home. You’ll discuss any concerns you have about your power consumption and adding EV charging. You typically have them install a dedicated 240 volt plug and this costs a couple hundred dollars for modern homes, $1,000 to $3,000 for older homes.

5. Buy Your Charger & Have it Installed

Find the electric vehicle home charger that’s perfect for your needs and have it installed by the electrician of your choice. This is the final step!

Connecticut EV Incentives for Your Home Charger

Home charging options make EV ownership simpler and more rewarding for Greenwich drivers, but did you know that charging at home can also help you take advantage of a Connecticut EV rebate? When Connecticut EV drivers purchase and install a home charging unit, they may be eligible for a home EV charging incentive through one of the following companies:

  • Eversource: In Connecticut, an EV rebate of up to $1,000 is available from Eversource on the purchase and installation of select Level 2 Smart EV Chargers. If you’ve already done so and it was after January 2022, you may be eligible to be grandfathered into qualification for this rebate.
  • Groton Utilities: For customers who get an approved Level 2 charging station, Groton Utilities in Connecticut has electric car incentives that could include a rebate of up to $600.
