What Is an Emissions Test?

Car emissions from exhaust pipe

Residents of some states need to get an emissions test to make sure their vehicle doesn’t emit too much exhaust, particularly in states with high populations. Emissions testing is also referred to as smog checks. If you receive a notification in the mail that you need an emissions test, we recommend you get one before you continue driving around Rye and Stamford.

Your modern new or pre-owned vehicle includes an onboard computer that oversees engine performance concerning fuel, spark, and air. Emissions tests check the operation of your vehicle’s onboard computer, as well as measure the levels of pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxygen, and oxides of nitrogen that come from your exhaust. Emissions testing determines whether your car is exceeding the legal levels of these pollutants.

In our guide, our service center will answer these emissions-related questions:

  • Do I need an emissions test?
  • How long does an emissions test take?
  • How much is an emissions test?

Do I Need an Emissions Test?

Over 30 states require emissions testing to some degree for registered vehicles. Because we live in a more densely populated state, our vehicles do require an emissions test periodically. Here are the states which currently require some form of emissions testing:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin

Any state not mentioned in the list above doesn’t require emissions testing for registered vehicles within its jurisdiction. Some states, like Missouri, only require emissions testing for certain cities. For example, St. Louis residents might be required to have emissions testing while Springfield residents may not. Typically, when you need an emissions test, your vehicle will need to pass one in order to register it properly.

How Long Does an Emissions Test Take?

Usually, emissions tests take 15 to 30 minutes. Testing times can vary. Naturally, the more requirements set by the state, the longer the test will take. Each state or locality sets its own emissions testing standards. We suggest you reach out to your local emissions testing center for more information so you can determine how to get an emissions test before you continue driving in New Canaan.

How Much is an Emissions Test?

The price of emissions testing varies from state to state. The test usually costs between $15 and $30. If your vehicle had annual emissions tests, the costs generally range to the lower end.
