What Is an Emissions Test?

Residents of some states need to get an emissions test to make sure their vehicle doesn’t emit too much exhaust, particularly in states with high populations. Emissions testing is also referred to as smog checks. Any state not mentioned in the list above doesn’t require emissions testing for registered vehicles within its jurisdiction. Some states, like Missouri, only require emissions testing for certain cities. For example, St. Louis residents might be required to have emissions testing while Springfield residents may not. Typically, when you need an emissions test, your vehicle will need to pass one in order to register it properly. 

How Long Does an Emissions Test Take?

Usually, emissions tests take 15 to 30 minutes. Testing times can vary. Naturally, the more requirements set by the state, the longer the test will take. Each state or locality sets its own emissions testing standards.
