Premium vs. Regular Gas: What’s the Difference?

Gas pumps in a row

The difference between premium and regular gas concerns their respective octane ratings: regular gas is generally rated at 87, while premium gasoline has an octane rating or 90 or above—usually 91 or 93. The vehicles that require premium gasoline do so for good reasons, but premium gasoline offers no measurable performance benefits in models that can take regular gas.

Ready to dig a little deeper? Compare premium vs. regular gas with our team to learn more about why premium is recommended for many Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

So, what is the practical difference between premium and regular gas? It all comes down to engine longevity and performance:

  • Higher octane ratings correspond directly to a lower likelihood of accidental or mistimed detonation, also known as pre-ignition.
  • This accidental or mistimed detonation is usually referred to as ‘engine knocking’—a type of error that can lead to performance declines in high-precision vehicles or models with built-in turbochargers.
  • Non-luxury vehicles don’t offer the same level of precision or performance, and that means the effect of engine knocking in these vehicles is less severe. The risk of using regular gasoline in these vehicles is usually much lower.

If you notice a knocking sound when you’re driving on Stamford or New Canaan highways, you might want to have our service team investigate.

Premium vs. Regular Gas Prices

You know that premium gas can help to protect the performance of your engine, but is it worth the extra price? Premium gasoline can cost as much as 20, 40, or even 60 cents more per gallon when compared to regular gasoline, so you should factor this difference into your payment plan if you’re considering a luxury vehicle. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the difference between premium vs. regular gas prices may vary depending on where you go in Rye and Stamford.

If you drive a vehicle that requires premium gasoline, it is absolutely worth the extra cost. Failing to use premium gas could have a major impact on your engine—especially over time. If your vehicle requires premium, and you fill up with regular, you may notice that your power declines, your fuel efficiency goes down, and your CO2 emissions increase.
