8 Popular Electric Car Service Questions – EV Maintenance FAQs

One of the main perks of choosing an EV for your New Canaan travels is the benefit of reduced maintenance. EVs often don’t require oil changes or spark plug services because there’s no internal combustion engine. Electric vehicle maintenance is much simpler and more straightforward. With that being said, we know you may still have some questions. Let’s answer eight of the most popular electric car service questions:

Do Electric Cars Need Oil?

No, electric vehicles don’t typically use oil because there’s no internal combustion engine that needs oil for lubrication. With an EV, you can likely skip oil changes during regular maintenance.

Do Electric Cars Have a Transmission?

Vehicles with an ICE need a transmission to ensure the engine is operating at the proper RPMs. EVs can offer near-instantaneous acceleration because electric motors can spin much faster. With that in mind, EVs do have a transmission but since there’s no need to worry about being in the right gear for optimal power, most EVs have a transmission that doesn’t need to change gears a bunch of times.

Do Electric Cars Have Horsepower?

Electric cars don’t have engines but do electric cars have horsepower? Yes! EVs do have horsepower but it’s usually measured in kW power because electric motors produce such an immense amount of power. Most automakers do list EVs with a horsepower rating but others may list it with a kilowatt measurement.

Do Electric Cars Have Alternators?

Alternators help with charging your vehicle’s battery utilizing power from the ICE. Alternators are a wear-and-tear item and will eventually need to be replaced once vehicles have plenty of miles on them. EVs on the other hand, usually don’t have an alternator. Most EVs utilize a DC-to-DC converter that can charge the 12-volt battery with power from the vehicle’s large battery pack.

Are There Catalytic Converters on an Electric Car?

With zero tailpipe emissions, EVs don’t have a catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are designed to reduce pollutants coming out of a vehicle’s exhaust. Catalytic converters usually will need to be replaced when they get to a certain mileage.

Is There an Exhaust on an Electric Car?

Electric vehicles don’t have an exhaust system because there’s no ICE to exhaust fumes from. No exhaust also means quieter drives around town.

Are Electric Cars Reliable?

There are fewer moving parts in an EV which means there’s usually less that can go wrong. EVs usually offer much simpler maintenance schedules and many EVs even provide a long warranty for less to worry about when you’re on your adventures.

Do Electric Cars Have Heat & AC?

Yes! Electric vehicles have AC and heat to make your drives more comfortable. With an EV, you won’t have to wait for an engine to warm up as it can likely offer instant cool or warm air out of the HVAC vents.
