The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC is at once exceptional and accessible, with a starting price of $42,500 MSRP*. Although the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE competes in the same mid-size class, it starts out with a higher price of $54,750 MSRP*. Is the upgrade to the larger model–which offers an available third row–worth the cost? Although much may depend on how much passenger space you think you’ll need, we’ve compared the Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. GLE in depth so you can see exactly what sets them apart.

GLC vs. GLE: Performance Specs

The Mercedes-Benz GLC offers more standard and available power than the BMW X3, but how well does it compare to the larger GLE SUV? While these models offer the same base engine, there are significant differences between their base specs and capabilities. What’s more, these differences become even more pronounced as one moves down the lineup.

Here’s what you need to know to compare the Mercedes-Benz GLC vs. GLE on performance:

  • Standard Engine: With either model, you’ll receive a standard 255-hp 2.0L turbo inline-4. However, the smaller GLC gets 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The GLE, with 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, is slightly less efficient as standard.
  • Powertrain Lineups: The GLC is available with up to 469 hp in its range-topping AMG® GLC 63 SUV configuration. It’s also offered as an exceptionally efficient hybrid, the GLC 350e 4MATIC® SUV. However, if it’s power you’re after, you’ll love the AMG® GLE 63 S 4MATIC® SUV, which offers up to 603 hp.
  • Capability: As standard, when equipped with a towing hitch, the GLE offers a towing capacity of 5,950 pounds. Upgrade with 4MATIC® AWD to reach the maximum 7,700-pound capacity. Either way, you’ll be able to handle more weight than a GLC, which can only tow up to 3,500 pounds with the proper hitch.

It’s worth noting that the GLE 580 has not yet been released for 2021. This means that both models currently offer a total of four unique powertrains to choose from.

GLC vs. GLE: Interior Features & Cargo Space

If you’re comparing the GLC vs. GLE, you should know off the bat that neither SUV will disappoint on features as you drive through Stamford and New Canaan. Both include each of the following as standard:

  • Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX)
  • A 12.3-inch touchscreen with voice control
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated power front seats with driver memory

However, there’s no way around the fact that the GLE is larger than the GLC. With optional seating for up to seven, it’s also the only model that can go toe-to-toe with other 3rd-row SUVs. Aside from the above, the biggest differences in their interiors have to do with 2nd-row legroom and cargo space:

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Interior Dimensions:

  • Passenger Capacity: 5
  • Headroom: 37.8 inches (1st) / 38.5 inches (2nd)
  • Legroom: 40.8 inches (1st) / 37.3 inches (2nd)
  • Maximum Cargo Capacity: 56.5 cubic feet
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE Interior Dimensions:

  • Passenger Capacity: 5 to 7 (optional)
  • Front Headroom: 40.5 inches (1st) / 36.9 inches (2nd)
  • Legroom: 40.3 inches (1st) / 40.9 inches (2nd)
  • Maximum Cargo Capacity: 74.9 cubic feet

The GLE SUV’s 3rd-Row Seat Package costs $2,100. In addition to increasing your total passenger capacity to seven, this package includes features like power-adjustable 2nd-row seats and 3rd-row USB ports.
