The Types of Electric Vehicles

Mercedes-Benz EV Charging

As we journey towards a greener future, understanding the various types of electric vehicles (EVs) available is essential. Electric vehicles come in different formats, each with unique features and benefits. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich, we explore the question: How many types of electric vehicles are there, and what sets each apart?

How Many Types of Electric Vehicles Are There?

Electric vehicles (EVs) can be broadly classified into several types based on their source of power and how they utilize electricity. Here are the main types:

  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs): These vehicles are fully electric, with their propulsion coming from an electric motor powered by rechargeable battery packs. They do not have a gasoline engine, exhaust system, or fuel tank.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs): PHEVs have both an electric motor and a traditional gasoline engine. They can be recharged by plugging into an external source of electric power, as well as by the vehicle’s engine and generator. They can operate on electric power alone for short to medium distances before switching to gasoline for longer trips.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs): These vehicles also have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine, but they cannot be plugged in to recharge. Instead, the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine. The electric motor can power the vehicle alone at low speeds and assist the engine when accelerating.
  • Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs): FCEVs are powered by electricity generated from hydrogen fuel cells. They only emit water vapor and warm air. This technology is relatively new and is being developed for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
