In the world of German luxury automakers, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have been a ubiquitous presence for nearly a century. Both vaunted manufacturers have enthusiastic vehicle owners who will stand by their brands no matter what. They’re both moving forward with an electrified future, leading to lower costs of ownership for drivers who want plug-in convenience without worrying about gas prices in Rye and Stamford.
Take a look at which carmaker is better in the BMW vs Mercedes-Benz debate. Our guide from Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich will point the way to which manufacturer is better as a whole.
Both German automakers have a long history of producing top luxury brands and race cars in Europe. As the brands become more well-known, they started to become popular in the United States.
BMW began in 1917 in Munich, Germany. The brand also owns MINI and Rolls-Royce. BMW was one of the founding members of Formula One back in 1950, and it has had a heavy presence in auto racing ever since. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the automaker went all-in with their engines on F1 cars, with Nelson Piquet winning the F1 championship in 1983 thanks in part to a BMW powerplant.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is its own standalone brand. One of its subsidiaries tests and manufactures racing engines for Formula One cars, some of the fastest race cars in the world that reach speeds of 215 mph but have been pushed to go as fast as 230 mph.
Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have plenty of models out for 2023. Mercedes released 78 models and trims for 2023, while BMW had around 45. Many of the Mercedes-Benz and BMW models had no or very minor changes from the 2022 versions, but they were made for the 2023 model year.
Both manufacturers released all-new EVs and electric SUVs for the model year 2023 as part of the brand’s redesign as more Americans want electric vehicles in their garages. Both companies form a vital part of the EV investment in the coming years.
Both automakers are based in Germany. However, buying a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle supports American jobs at two plants. Mercedes-Benz has two assembly plants in the United States, one in South Carolina and the other in Alabama. The one in South Carolina manufactures Sprinter vans.
The Alabama assembly plant makes GLE vehicles, GLS models, and all-new EQS SUVs. For dealership numbers, Mercedes-Benz has the edge with 383 American dealerships to just 366 for BMW. Both European-based brands are popular, though!
We would like to think “no” simply because the Mercedes-Benz brand is more popular among enthusiasts and experts, and the automaker produced more vehicles in 2023.
