About
The three-pointed star emblazoned on the hood of each Mercedes-Benz hood represents the drive for universal motorization as outlined by the company nearly a century ago. Each of the three points on the star symbolizes land, sea, and air, which the company wanted to conquer with its world-class engines. You’ve seen this famous three-pointed star logo of Mercedes-Benz emblazoned on the hood ornaments of every one of these new luxury vehicles for nearly 100 years.
The Mercedes-Benz symbol has been refined over the years, but the Mercedes-Benz logo’s meaning has remained consistent since the founders of the company created it in 1927. The Mercedes-Benz symbol of the three-pointed star has been an iconic symbol of luxury, engineering, and quality for nearly a century from one of the world’s top automotive brands. After you read more about the meaning of the Mercedes-Benz logo, come check out our inventory of new vehicles! We’d love to put one of these great vehicles in your Rye garage!
In 1890, Gottlieb Daimler (who also founded Daimler-Chrysler) founded the car company that would become Mercedes-Benz alongside Karl Benz in Germany. Their company, DMG or Daimler-Benz, created a car named Mercedes in 1900. Eventually, Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek would take over the company, but Daimler’s sons remained involved in the company for several years.
One day in 1909, the two Daimler brothers remembered a postcard that had been sent to them by their father in 1872. On the postcard, he had marked the location of their family home with a distinctive three-pointed star. In honor of their father, the brothers acquired the logo and started emblazoning it on all of their vehicles. Initially, the logo was blue. Then, it was given a thick laurel border in 1926.
It was a bit more ornate than what the Mercedes-Benz logo looks like today. In 1927, there were 7,000 Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles produced, so the three-pointed star was all over German cities. Finally, the color of the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star was changed to silver in 1934, making it the Mercedes symbol we recognize today. The vehicles were known for quality and longevity, as many historic Mercedes-Benz cars are in museums today.
The silver, three-pointed star represents the domination of land, sea, and air that the Daimler sons believed that their company would one day conquer. Think about this as you drive around Stamford or get near the Atlantic coastline to see a ship in the distance. Daimler-Benz did manufacture propeller plane engines for use in aircraft before World War II.
Those airplane engines served as the basis for diesel marine engines as part of the Mercedes-AMG® line of diesel marine engines found in high-powered boats and racing boats. So, the prediction of the Daimler brothers was true. The meaning of the Mercedes-Benz logo truly led to conquering all aspects of the three-pointed star.
The Mercedes-AMG® logo can appear cryptic in comparison to the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. It actually also has a fairly simple and sentimental meaning. The Mercedes-AMG® logo has two parts:
If you’re lucky enough to drive a Mercedes-AMG® vehicle around New Canaan, you’ll know that your car is built with passion and care. Whether you select a Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle or a Mercedes-AMG® ultra-luxury high-performance car, you’ll get the same world-class luxury found in every vehicle produced since the 1920s. The three-pointed star logo is more than just a symbol. The Mercedes-Benz logo meaning is imbued into every vehicle on our lot.
