Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

Close Up Of Hand Holding Power Cable For electric car

Do electric cars have transmissions like gas-powered vehicles? The answer is yes, the transmission is an important part of the EV powertrain just like any other vehicle. However, the electric car transmission operates slightly differently than your typical gas-powered model. Find out the key differences between transmission designs with Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich, and stop by our dealership in Greenwich to learn more service tips from our experts!

How Many Gears Are on Electric Cars?

The biggest difference between electric car transmissions and gas-powered transmissions lies within the gears. It’s common to see 8-speed or 9-speed transmissions for a standard vehicle, but the gears on electric cars are much more limited. In fact, most EVs have a single-speed transmission.

Why? An electric motor can produce near-instantaneous torque, and drivers can access all the vehicle power as soon as they step onto the accelerator. Internal combustion engines need to rev the engine for peak power, which means more gears are necessary. How does this translate into real-world performance? Here’s how an electric vehicle powertrain works on the Stamford and New Canaan roads:

  1. As soon as you step on the accelerator, electricity surges from the battery to the motor.
  2. The motor spins and turns the gearbox in the process. EVs rotate up to 20,000 rpm, while combustion engines only reach around 7,000 rpm.
  3. The electric motor and gearbox rotate, causing the EV to move.
  4. If you need to reverse, the electric motor spins backwards instead of forwards.

Do You Have To Maintain Electric Car Transmissions?

Now you know more about transmissions and gears on electric cars, but what about maintenance? Like any other vehicle, the EV transmission does require a little maintenance from time to time. We recommend looking through your owner’s manual to see what is recommended for your make and model. Many EVs need regular transmission fluid maintenance, but not all models have transmission fluid. Contact our service department if you’d like additional help formulating a solid maintenance schedule!
